On December 19, 2022, P2 Energy Solutions reported a data breach with the Office of the Maine Attorney General after learning that an unauthorized party was able to bypass the company’s data security system and access confidential consumer information. According to P2, the breach resulted in affected consumers’ names and Social Security numbers being compromised. Recently, P2 sent out data breach letters to all affected parties, informing them of the incident and what they can do to protect themselves from identity theft and other frauds.

If you’ve done business with P2 Energy Solutions and received a “Notice of Data Breach” from the company, your information was among that which was accessible to an unauthorized party. As we’ve discussed in prior posts, hackers routinely target consumers’ Social Security numbers because this information enables them to commit a wide range of frauds. Alternatively, hackers sometimes sell stolen Social Security numbers on the dark web to make a quick profit. In either case, criminals end up with your information, which they can use to commit identity theft and other frauds. Therefore, as a data breach victim, it is imperative that you understand what you can do to mitigate the risk of fraud and your right to pursue a claim for compensation against a company that leaks your personal information.
