What Caused the Data Breach Affecting Pacific Life Customers?

The Infosys McCamish Systems / Pacific Life data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Pacific Life’s filing with the Attorney General of Massachusetts provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on November 2, 2023, IMS learned that portions of the company’s IT network were encrypted by ransomware. In response, IMS launched an investigation with the help of outside cybersecurity experts.

Through this investigation, IMS confirmed that there was unauthorized activity within its network between October 29, 2023 and November 2, 2023. It was also determined that the unauthorized party accessed certain files containing confidential information belonging to Pacific Life customers.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Infosys McCamish Systems reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. IMS completed this process on October 15, 2024. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number and financial account information.

On October 31, 2024, Infosys McCamish Systems sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
