Pinnacle Propane Notifies Victims of Leaked Social Security Numbers Following Data Breach

On April 28, 2023, Pinnacle Propane (“Pinnacle”) filed a notice of data breach with the Montana Attorney General after confirming that consumer data within the company’s possession was leaked as a result of a recent cyberattack. Based on the company’s official filing, the incident resulted in an unauthorized party gaining access to consumers’ names and Social Security numbers. After confirming that consumer data was leaked, Pinnacle began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals who were impacted by the recent data security incident.

What We Know So Far About the Pinnacle Propane Breach

News of the Pinnacle Propane data breach is still fresh; however, what we know at this point comes from the company’s filing with the Montana Attorney General. According to this source, on December 4, 2022, Pinnacle learned that an unauthorized party was able to access the company’s computer network between November 28, 2022 and December 6, 2022. In response, Pinnacle quickly secured its computer system, notified law enforcement, and then began working with third-party data security specialists to investigate the incident.

The Pinnacle investigation confirmed that some of the files that were accessible to the unauthorized party contained confidential consumer information.

Upon discovering that sensitive consumer data was made available to an unauthorized party, Pinnacle Propane began to review the affected files to determine what information was compromised and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name and Social Security number.

On April 28, 2023, Pinnacle Propane sent out data breach letters to all individuals whose information was compromised as a result of the recent data security incident.
