The United States Energy Information Administration published a January 19th report titled:

Increasing Renewables Likely to Reduce Coal and Natural Gas Generation Over Next Two Years (“Report”)

The Report addresses projections for the roles of natural gas, coal, nuclear, wind, and solar over the next two years.

By way of summary the United States power generation is projected to experience:

• Increases in new renewables capacity (predominantly wind and solar)
• Reduction in coal-fired and natural gas-fired power plants

The projections address the years 2023 and 2024.

Projected percentages for the power sources include:

• Wind-Solar – 16 percent (increase from 14 percent in 2022)
• Coal – 18 percent (reduced from 20 percent in 2022)

Growth trends in the solar and wind United States electric power sector are noted to include:

• 74 gigawatts solar photovoltaic capacity (2022) (noted to be approximately three times the capacity at the end of 2017)
• 143 gigawatts wind power (stated to have seen 60 percent growth since 2017)
