The Association of State and Territorial Solid Waste Management Officials (“ASTSWMO”) announced a checklist titled:

Preparing Post-Construction Cleanup Sites for Natural Disasters (“Checklist”)

The Checklist was developed by the ASTSWMO CERCLA Post Construction Focus Group.

The Checklist’s purpose is stated to include:

  • Helps states in identifying efficient and effective measures for preparation in advance of potential natural disasters
  • Aid in the identification of likely concerns following a natural disaster
  • Be used to identify and respond to changed conditions at sites to support action to ensure protectiveness of human health and the environment

The following practices are recommended to help states prepare to react following a natural disaster:

  • Pre-event planning: Assess site conditions to compile site specific details to complete the checklist prior to a natural disaster.
  • Pre-event information: Identify and collect site plans/data and contact information so the information is readily available should a disaster occur. Periodically review this information to ensure that it is current
  • Post-event information: Use the checklist to identify conditions that require action/repair and track planned actions.

ASTSWMO describes itself as an organization representing the 50 states, five territories, and the District of Columbia whose mission is to enhance and promote effective state and territorial programs and to affect relevant national policies for waste and materials management, environmentally sustainable practices, and environmental restoration.
