President Donald Trump appointed Philip A. Miscimarra as acting chairman of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Miscimarra was nominated to the NLRB by President Obama in 2013, where he was then unanimously confirmed by the ruling Senate committee.
Miscimarra’s appointment is President Trump’s first move in shaping the NLRB under his leadership. Notably, there are two vacancies on the NLRB, which traditionally is comprised of three members of the president’s party and two members of the opposition. Miscimarra, a Republican, now assumes the chairmanship from Mark Gaston Pearce, a Democrat.
Miscimarra’s term at the NLRB expires on December 16, 2017. Miscimarra previously worked as a labor and employment lawyer in Chicago and as a fellow at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton Business School. Mr. Miscimarra’s profile can be viewed here.
Trump also appointed Victoria Lipnic to serve as the acting chair of the EEOC. Lipnic has been a commissioner at the EEOC since 2010. She was one of two commissioners who voted against the EEOC’s July 2015 decision finding that sexual orientation discrimination is gender discrimination under Title VII. She also voted against the EEOC’s July 2014 pregnancy discrimination guidance. She previously worked in private practice in Washington, D.C. Ms. Lipnic’s profile can be viewed here.
