In an effort to prevent Providence R.I. homeowners from subsidizing the homestead exemption for landlords and non-resident owners, homeowners must submit a reapplication for homestead tax exemption by March 15, 2012. A copy of the homeowner’s vehicle registration bearing the property address and one of the following: driver’s license with the address, homeowner’s insurance policy or automobile insurance policy must be included. The current tax rate is $31.89 for every $1,000 of assessed value. The homestead tax exemption exempts the first 50% of a home's assessed value.
