Ports plan for future zero-emission goal with cleaner, safer energy

Long Beach Press-Telegram - Oct 18 After years of pressure from environmental groups and the community to become greener, the Port of Long Beach, the nation’s busiest cargo complex, is developing plans to create a stand-alone, zero-emission energy source. The years-long effort at the port to create what it’s called “energy island” could revolutionize operations in ways big and small, from changing how cargo boxes are taken off ships to generating a consistent flow of making more environmentally friendly power. Similar efforts are underway at the Port of Los Angeles. More concept than actual island, the policy envisions a port run on renewable energy such as solar and hydrogen. Just how that endeavor will end up is unclear but harbor officials said they are taking the first steps by laying out a game plan.

Proposed solar project in Ventura County gets new player

Ventura County Star - Oct 19 A former oil refinery property east of Fillmore in Ventura County won’t become a solar field until sometime next year, now that the property owner has brought on a new company to build and operate the array. In May, the Ventura County Planning Commission approved a permit for Chevron, the property owner, and Stion Solar to put a solar array on 25 acres of the 60-acre property. Stion was dropped from the project in July, and Chevron signed a contract last month with Cenergy Power to build and operate the solar field, said Leslie Klinchuch, Chevron’s project manager for the Fillmore site.

Massive New Mexico wind farm to supply California customers

San Jose Mercury News - Oct 17 After years of planning and delays, work has resumed on what officials are billing as one of New Mexico’s largest wind farms as companies look to take advantage of extended federal tax incentives in hopes of boosting the role of wind in the nation’s energy portfolio. Politicians and executives with Avangrid Renewables gathered Monday to celebrate the restart of construction on the El Cabo Wind Farm, a complex that will span nearly 90 square miles of private property and state trust land in east-central New Mexico. Company officials expect installation to be complete by the end of 2017, with the electricity generated heading to Southern California Edison customers soon afterward.

Caltrans, Sacramento utility partner on Greenergy renewable resource program

Equipment World - Oct 20 The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) have partnered on the city’s Greenergy program to supply the agency with electricity from renewable resources to power traffic signals, highway lighting, and buildings in the area. SMUD, the nation’s sixth-largest, community-owned electric service provider, is offering the Greenergy program to state agencies.

8minutenergy begins capital raise for solar project pipeline

Solar Industry Magazine - Oct 20 California-based solar developer 8minutenergy Renewables LLC is initiating a capital-raising process to fuel growth of its 5.5-gigawatt U.S. pipeline, including over 500 megawatts of wholly-owned near-shovel-ready projects with long-term power purchase agreements and an enterprise value in excess of $1 billion. 8minutenergy says it has developed over 700 megawatts of operational projects since its founding.

Vasari Energy signs land deal for 68MW project in Arizona

PV-Tech - Oct 14 California-based PV energy provider Vasari Energy has signed a contract to buy 450 acres land in Maricopa County, Arizona, for the development of a 68-megawatt solar installation. The project will be developed through Sonoran Solar Development Partners, a wholly owned development partnership of Vasari Energy. Construction on the site is expected to begin in 2019, with operations set to ramp up by October 2020.

SolarCity, Credit Suisse partner to finance more than $300 million in residential solar PV projects

SolarServer - Oct 18 SolarCity Corp. has created a new fund to finance more than $300 million in solar photovoltaic projects with Credit Suisse. The fourth such collaboration between SolarCity and Credit Suisse will allow thousands of homeowners in the U.S. to pay less for solar electricity than they pay for utility bills, SolarCity emphasizes.

PG&E teams up with Green Charge for aggregated grid storage project

Utility Dive - Oct 19 Green Charge Networks has teamed up with Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) to deliver grid services in northern and central California from distributed energy storage. Under the partnership, Green Charge will develop and aggregate a fleet of energy storage systems in San Jose to evaluate how customer-sited energy storage can be used to support the grid during periods of high electric demand. The Green Charge storage systems will be used to provide capacity relief at selected distribution substations and will be integrated with a Distributed Energy Resource Management System being developed collaboratively by PG&E and GE Grid Solutions.
