Stanly Community College Files Notice of Data Breach After Hackers Gain Access to Employee Email Accounts

On May 24, 2023, Stanly Community College filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Massachusetts after the school learned that confidential information in its possession was subject to unauthorized access. Based on the company’s official filing, the incident resulted in an unauthorized party gaining access to consumers’ names, Social Security numbers, student ID numbers, and driver’s license numbers. After confirming that consumer data was leaked, SCC began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals who were impacted by the recent data security incident.

What We Know So Far About the Stanly Community College Breach

News of the Stanly Community College data breach is still fresh; however, what we know at this point comes from the company’s filing with the Attorney General of Massachusetts. Unfortunately, the information provided on the Massachusetts AG’s website is limited, and, at this point, all we know is that SCC experienced a data security incident that prompted the school to launch an investigation into the incident.

However, the school also posted notice of the breach on its website, which provides additional information. Evidently, on July 13, 2022, SCC confirmed suspicions that unusual activity within the school’s network was related to a cyberattack targeting several employee email accounts. In response, SCC launched an investigation, which confirmed unauthorized access to the SCC email accounts on July 29, 2021, as well as between August 15-17, 2021 and August 3, 2021 to September 9, 2021.

The Stanly Community College investigation also confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access certain files stored on the school’s network. It was later determined that some of these files contained confidential personal information.

Upon discovering that sensitive consumer data was made available to an unauthorized party, Stanly Community College began to review the affected files to determine what information was compromised and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, student ID number and driver’s license number.

On May 24, 2023, Stanly Community College sent out data breach letters to all individuals whose information was compromised as a result of the recent data security incident.
