On December 1, Texas Attorney General (AG) Ken Paxton issued a press release announcing an investigation into Shein US Services LLC Corporate and its affiliates (Shein).
As discussed in a prior podcast on a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act lawsuit against Shein, Shein is a company known for inexpensive, fashionable products. This fast-fashion retailer mostly operates through an online platform to sell clothing, accessories, and home décor products.
The Texas AG’s investigation is exploring whether “Shein’s supply chain and manufacturing practices violate Texas law by using toxic or hazardous materials, misleading consumers about product safety, and misleading consumers about ethical sourcing.” The investigation is also examining Shein’s data collection and privacy practices.
Paxton’s press release directly cites the Health and Human Services’ (HHS) “Make America Healthy Again” initiative and emphasizes Texas’ scrutiny of labor standards and product safety.
Why It Matters
This investigation is the most recent of a series of initiatives and investigations by Paxton that directly reference the “Make America Healthy Again” program. This latest effort reaffirms Texas remains focused on product safety for alleged violations of state law.
