The water bond is not the complete solution to California’s water problems, but there is no single solution to California’s water problems. Making California’s water use sustainable in an uncertain future will require a combination of strategies, including:

  • more surface and underground storage
  • conservation
  • use of recycled water (including direct potable reuse)
  • recapture of rainwater
  • better integration and coordination of management between water districts and other public agencies
  • substantial cleanup of contaminated groundwater basins
  • desalination

Because the water bond will substantially boost some of these measures it is necessary and beneficial to California’s water future. This piece from Public CEO outlines in greater detail what the water bond does and does not do. As it states, the water bond is not perfect, but it is a much needed step forward.
