Practice/Organization Description

Established in 1973, ELLYN LAW LLP is a Toronto business litigation and arbitration firm. We act on cases involving shareholder disputes, oppression remedy, contracts, agency and distributorship, trade disputes, libel and defamation, foreign judgment enforcement and foreign arbitral award enforcement.

Applying the motto, “Thinking Globally. Acting Locally.”, ELLYN LAW LLP have represented individual and corporate clients successfully in complex matters. Our clients include business people whose corporate interests are jeopardy. We have also acted for Canadian financial institutions, foreign banks and several Fortune 1000 companies or their principals. Our clients include Canadian firms with global business interests.

Senior Partner Igor Ellyn began his practice more than 38 years ago. He is a former president of Canadian Bar Association-Ontario. Mr. Ellyn is a Chartered Arbitrator and mediator and a member of the Panel of International Commercial Arbitrators of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. He is also on the panels of ADR Chambers International, the ADR Institute of Ontario and the Better Business Bureau. He has appeared as counsel in the UK High Court of Justice.

Igor Ellyn is a prolific legal author and speaker on litigation and advocacy matters. Many of his articles are posted at www.ellynlaw.com and elsewhere on the internet. He is the co-author of the Canada chapter of Enforcement of Money Judgments (Juris Publishing NY). His acclaimed articles on Shareholder Disputes, Winning Business Appeals, Arbitration and other aspects of advocacy are published on the internet. Mr. Ellyn and the other lawyers of Ellyn Law LLP are authors of the Canada chapter of International Liability of Corporate Directors (Yorkhill Publishing 2012). He has made presentations to the Canadian Bar Association, Law Society of Upper Canada, Canadian Professional Institute, Osgoode Professional Development, New York State Bar Association, Cornell University Institute of Labor Relations and the Center for International Legal Studies. He speaks French and Romanian fluently and is very conversant in German and Hebrew.

Partner Orie Niedzviecki, who is also admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, is the head of our estate litigation group and also acts on commercial litigation matters as well as employment law, construction litigation and some intellectual property litigation. He appears as counsel in complex litigation matters in the Superior Court of Justice, the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court of Canada. He is the author of several legal articles. He is conversant in Hebrew and has some knowledge of French and Arabic.

Senior Associate Evelyn Perez-Youssoufian has experience in shareholders' disputes, employment law, arbitration, judgment enforcement, internet defamation and other business litigation areas. She is a graduate of the dual law program of the University of Windsor and the University of Detroit-Mercy. Ms. Perez has often appeared as counsel in all Ontario Courts. She co-authored several legal articles. She speaks Spanish and Armenian fluently.

Associate Belinda Schubert is graduated Magna Cum Laude from Princeton University and from the Faculty of Law of the University of British Columbia and practiced business litigation and human rights before joining Ellyn Law LLP. She has appeared before the Superior Court of Justice and some tribunals. She speaks German and French fluently.

Associate Lauren Lackie joined Ellyn Law LLP in 2011. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BA in Economics from Barnard College, Columbia University. Ms. Lackie graduated from the JD/MA (International Relations) program at the University of Toronto in 2009. Ms. Lackie is the co-author of several legal articles, including "Tips for Recognizing the Most Suitable Claims" (Law Society of Upper Canada, Practice Gems). She was a co-author and co-ordinator of the firm's chapter on Liability of Corporate Directors.
