Rhys Clift possesses a “remarkable depth of expertise" (The International Who’s Who of Shipping and Maritime Lawyers 2010 ).

English solicitor with over 30 years experience in commercial litigation and arbitration, with particular emphasis on marine and non-marine insurance and reinsurance matters and disputes (including off-shore construction, kidnap & ransom and political violence), maritime casualties (groundings, explosions, fires, structural failures), disputes under charter parties and bills of lading and in the co-ordination and supervision of multi-jurisdictional disputes. He has a particular interest in crisis management and cyber hazard.

Listed in numerous professional guides including Expert Guides: The Legal Media Group Guide to the World’s Leading Lawyers: (Insurance and Reinsurance, UK 2017 and International Trade and Shipping 2017). Legal 500 2016 says that he is "highly regarded". He is ranked in Legal 500 2017 both in Shipping and Insurance. He is named in The Who's Who Legal 2018.

He is a prolific author and has written numerous bulletins, articles and papers, on insurance/reinsurance, dispute resolution and on mediation published (or republished) nationally and internationally in English and in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish and Swedish.

He has spoken widely on insurance/reinsurance, dispute resolution and mediation variously in the UK and abroad including in Belgium, Cyprus, France, Germany, Dubai, India, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and Venezuela (feedback: "absolutely first class").

Rhys graduated in law magna cum laude (LLB Hons 2:1) from Aberystwyth University in 1979 (Careswell Scholar), passed Solicitors Finals in 1980 with honours and was awarded the Alfred Syrett Prize in 1981. Obtained a post-graduate degree (DESU) from the University of Aix-en-Provence, France in 1981 (primarily in European Competition Law).

Rhys was trained by CEDR and accredited as a mediator in 1998. He is listed as a CEDR Solve mediator and on the Panel of Distinguished Neutrals at the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution (CPR) in New York.

Rhys is author of “Mediation in England and Wales” a compendium of essays, originally published in 2010 (also available in French and Italian); designer and co-author of “Alternative Dispute Resolution in Practice” published by the Institute of Insurance of London in 2011. In reviewing “Mediation in England and Wales” Sir Henry Brooke, then Chairman of the Civil Mediation Council said “Rhys Clift has a formidable reputation in the mediation market place” that the book is “excellent”, a “must read”. Professor Greiman of Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government says that the book is “essential reading”.
