Practice/Organization Description

Since mid-2010, Rob has been senior strategy manager at Linklaters. Through the decade prior, his consulting practice focused largely on strategy-related work with law firms in the United States, Europe, Africa and Southeast Asia. Earlier, through the 1990s, it ranged from general business strategy to infrastructure development to sustainability consulting to business systems.

That today’s legal services markets are intensely challenging is beyond obvious. New growth opportunities abound, though. Rob is passionate about helping lawyers to reinvent their law firms, to better seize these. Globalization, legal service commoditisation and exponential advances in technology are transforming practices and client expectations far more rapidly than before the global economic crisis. International law firms must balance focus on familiar markets, in which they have invested heavily, with promising new emerging markets with greater risk/uncertainties. Multi-disciplinary practices in the UK and perhaps soon widely in the USA will create yet more complexity. Changes being wrought are systemic and permanent.

For too many law firms, responding to these challenges means simply improving efficiencies in their existing business models. Better short-term profitability may create the illusion of a solution, but this strategy is surely doomed in the long term. The business models being improved align with a world that no longer exists. The far more uncomfortable but essential route to sustained profitability must be to rethink (rigorously) the firm’s economic drivers; to develop new strategies and business models that align well with new market realities; and to execute those instead.

Being in the full-time employ of (he humbly submits) the world’s finest global law firm, Rob cannot accept consulting engagements. He is most interested, though, in dialogue on these and similar topics with people that have like-minded interests in law firm strategy.
