This quick reference describes general time requirements for filing lien notices in each state, plus Washington, DC. Seyfarth’s Construction team prepared the survey for use primarily by commercial contractors and real estate developers on non-public projects. Requirements may differ for residential and other contractors. The table does not provide required methods of service or the contents of lien notices, nor does it replace legal advice regarding the prosecution or defense of a lien claim. The survey shows lien statutes in effect as of October 1, 2023.
