On June 24, 2021, President Biden approved a $579 billion infrastructure package proposed by a bipartisan group of senators last week. Some $185 billion appears earmarked for actual infrastructure projects including bridges, roads, ports, waterways, public transportation and safety. According to the White House, the deal also includes clean drinking water, 500,000 electric vehicles charging stations and connecting every American to reliable high-speed internet service. Details of how the funds will actually be spent are lacking. Finally, the plan is financed through increased IRS enforcement, unspecified PPP measures and bonding programs among other equally unspecific funding measures. The Washington Post reports that conservatives are expected to reject the bipartisan proposal due in large part to increases to IRA enforcement powers as part of funding the proposal.
