AG Coalition Pushes for Recall of Theft-Prone Hyundai and Kia Vehicles

  • A group of 18 Democratic AGs wrote a letter to the National Highway Safety Administration (NHSTA) asking the agency to initiate a recall of certain vehicles manufactured by Hyundai Motor America and Kia America, Inc. that are not equipped with anti-theft immobilizers.
  • In the letter, the AGs argue that the software updates recently offered by Hyundai and Kia are not sufficient to fix the problem because the updates will take too long to be rolled out and are not feasible for all vehicles, and voluntary service campaigns lack the notice and other regulatory requirements of a recall.
  • The AGs ask the NHTSA to order a mandatory recall or to ensure the companies institute a voluntary recall because the vehicles are not in compliance with federal standards.
  • We previously covered a bipartisan AG coalition’s letter to Hyundai and Kia urging the companies to increase efforts to address the same issues.
