Kia and Hyundai Urged by Bipartisan Coalition of AGs to Increase Efforts to Combat Theft of Vehicles

A bipartisan coalition of 23 AGs wrote a letter to Kia America, Inc. and Hyundai Motor America urging the companies to increase their efforts to address skyrocketing theft rates over the last few years of certain vehicles not equipped with anti-theft immobilizers.
In the letter, the AGs criticize the companies for failing to include anti-theft immobilizers as standard equipment in many of the vehicles sold in the United States during a time period when all other manufacturers did so.
The AGs ask the companies to accelerate implementation of their announced software upgrade for affected vehicles, increase their efforts to provide physical anti-theft steering wheel devices to owners of affected vehicles, and provide free alternative protective measures for all owners whose vehicles cannot support the software upgrade.
