Welcome to the December edition of the Alston & Bird CPSC Recall Snapshot.
In November, the CPSC, Health Canada and Mexico’s Consumer Protection Federal Agency (PROFECO) held their Third North America Consumer Product Safety Summit in Mexico City. The three consumer protection agencies met to work together to “protect children in all three nations from harmful toys,” said CPSC Chairman Elliot F. Kaye. The Summit also involved an evaluation of the progress made in product safety monitoring and cooperation among the three countries since the previous summit was held in Ottawa, Canada, in 2013. These agencies work together to put forth joint industry trainings, consumer outreach and education, and have even issued three trilateral recall announcements of harmful toys and children’s products. The CPSC’s website indicates that the three nations are seeking to create “a safer marketplace” by implementing “(1) strong safety standards that are enforced, (2) inspections at import, and (3) an emphasis on quality safety manufacturing overseas.”
