Justin Bieber might be breathing a bit easier when he travels these days: the Red Notice in his name was reportedly removed. Bieber’s case provides an example of one of the situations in which a Red Notice is no longer a proper subject matter for INTERPOL’s involvement.
In order for INTERPOL to process data of an individual, an underlying arrest warrant or similar document must exist, and assurances must be made that the requesting country will actively seek extradition of the Red Notice subject if he is detained. In Bieber’s case, the underlying arrest warrant has been revoked by the Argentinian court. While the charges remain outstanding, the document that permitted INTERPOL’s involvement does not.
The primary effect of the removal of Bieber’s Red Notice is this: when he travels internationally, officials who check his information against INTERPOL’s databases should find no reason within those databases to detain or question him.
As always, thoughts and comments are welcome.
