The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (“ACEEE”) issued a May 2018 report titled:

Our Powers Combined: Energy Efficiency in Solar and Affordable Multifamily Buildings (“Report”)

The Report expresses concerns that many low-income individuals and families are finding it increasingly difficult to rent apartments.

The Report concludes that energy efficiency and solar energy can assist in saving affordable multifamily housing. This is stated to be demonstrated by:

  • Building owners combining energy efficiency upgrades in rooftop solar systems through energy use/lower energy bills
  • Utilization of upgrades enabling housing providers to devote more resources to preserving and expanding affordable housing

The authors of the Report are Stefen Samarripas and Dan York.

The Report addresses what is characterized as an absence of information about how affordable multifamily building owners and developers approach the integration of efficiency in solar resources in a building. Information in the Report was generated by interviews which included:

  • Program Administrators
  • Affordable Housing Providers
  • Lenders

These individuals are stated to have taken part in projects involving both efficiency upgrades and rooftop solar installations in affordable multifamily buildings. Topics addressed included:

  • Planning
  • Goals
  • Funding Sources
  • Lessons Learned

Four organizations described as having a success in integrating energy efficiency and solar resources in affordable multifamily properties are profiled.
