This weekend, Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson announced that he will not seek reelection for a third term in 2022. Peterson, a Republican who was first elected in 2014, previously served as an assistant attorney general in the Nebraska attorney general’s office from 1988 to 1990, before entering private practice.

During his tenure, which will continue until January 5, 2023, Peterson has led efforts seeking to halt federal overreach, and has headed bipartisan coalitions in antitrust and consumer protection matters, including enforcement against “Big Tech.” Consistent with one of the key priorities of “Protecting the Good Life,” Peterson recently announced a Consumer Affairs Response Team (CART) to respond to consumer complaints through “personal, one-on-one support covering a broad range of consumer issues, including scams, fraud and identity theft education, and dispute resolution.”

Peterson’s announcement also means that of the 31 state attorneys general elections in 2022, based upon term limits, or otherwise, at least six new attorneys general will hold office — Arizona, Arkansas, District of Columbia, Maryland, and New Mexico, in addition to Nebraska.

No candidates have officially announced their candidacy to fill Peterson’s position.
