US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has started automating the Form I-94 process for travelers applying for admission to the US at air and sea ports of entry - not for those individuals who are entering the US at land border ports of entry. The Form I-94 is the Arrival/Departure Record that is issued to foreign nationals to complete when entering the US.
Instead of receiving a paper Form I-94, a traveler will now receive a CBP admission stamp on his or her travel document. The traveler's passport will then be scanned by the CBP to generate an electronic arrival record. The automated implementation process is expected to take place over a four week period, which began on April 30, 2013, with five ports of entry.
Travelers may obtain a paper format of the Form I-94 for employment authorization purposes at www.cbp.gov/I94. The CBP has indicated that if a visitor needs to show proof of legal status prior to the automation for employment purposes, he or she should present an unexpired foreign passport showing country of citizenship as well as a copy of the Form I-94.
