The last month has seen some big shake-ups in both the federal and state judiciary. Here are your highlights:

  • Kennedy retires from SCOTUS. Justice Anthony Kennedy officially retired from the US Supreme Court on July 31. Kennedy, who served as the Court’s swing justice for over a decade, had an outsized impact on issues ranging from abortion to campaign finance to affirmative action. President Trump has nominated D.C. Circuit Judge Brett Kavanaugh to fill the vacancy.
  • The Chief is retired. Long live the Chief! Colorado Chief Justice Nancy Rice officially retired on June 30, and that same day Justice Nathan Coats assumed the role as head of the state’s judicial branch. The 69-year-old new chief justice will step down in 3 years once he hits the state’s mandatory retirement age.
  • Dark money in Colorado campaigns. The Colorado Independent quotes attorney Chris Jackson in reporting on the influx of dark money in two high-profile state senate races.
  • Lieutenant governor candidates selected. The major-party nominees for Colorado’s gubernatorial race have selected their running mates. Democrat Jared Polis selected former state representative Dianne Primavera, while Republican Walker Stapleton tapped state representative Lang Sias. In related news, the New York Times has profiled both gubernatorial candidates in separate pieces.
