Especially with their children now homebound, bored and seeking virtual social contact, many parents are particularly concerned about educating their children – preschool through high school — of the risks inherent in social media and other internet usage. Most parents, however, have no idea where to start. Unsurprisingly, grandparents may feel particularly ill-equipped to provide cybersecurity guidance, especially to their tech-savvy teenage grandchildren.

Fortunately, there are an increasing number of resources available to bridge the tech gap and provide valuable and necessary information regarding online dangers. A good beginning place is the “STOP.THINK.CONNECT.PARENT AND EDUCATOR RESOURCES” page on the website of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency (CISA), a standalone federal agency under the Department of Homeland Security. Here you can find links to a wealth of cyber hygiene resources tailored to all ages, including clueless parents and befuddled grandparents. For example, the ConnectSafely site provides a number of helpful tutorials, including The Parent’s Guide to Cyberbullying, The Parent’s Guide to TikTok, and the Parent’s Guide to Roblox (a video game platform). The Savvy Cyber Kids site likewise provides free cyber safety education resources.

Stop, think and wisely connect with your kids while you are all safe at home.
