ERCOT, NYISO, Southwest show potential for energy storage expansion: Deloitte

Bullet Utility Dive – October 3

The California Independent System Operator (CAISO) is the strongest market in the U.S. when it comes to using energy storage for renewable integration, grid optimization, and electrification and decentralization, with a 43.7 GW pipeline of energy storage projects, according to a recent Deloitte report. The report examined different regions of the country and analyzed their performance on using energy storage across three dimensions – renewables integration, grid optimization, and electrification and decentralization support. New York is another region that is ripe for the growth of energy storage. In 2022, the state – which is aiming to achieve 70% renewable electricity by the end of the decade – doubled its 2030 energy storage target to 6 GW.

Biden administration approves more offshore drilling in bid to expand wind energy

Bullet CNN – September 29

The Biden administration is planning as many as three new oil and gas drilling lease sales in federal waters over the next five years – a move that will likely prompt legal challenges. But the plan, which the Interior Department was required by law to create, comes with a trade-off: It allows officials to offer more federal waters for clean wind energy. The Inflation Reduction Act required the Interior Department to propose a certain number of oil and gas leases in federal waters in exchange for the ability to propose clean offshore wind energy projects. Three was the lowest number that would allow it to move forward with offshore wind lease sales around the country, the department said, given the requirements of the law.

EPA wants to tighten up their ‘zero-emission’ building definition

Bullet Popular Science – September 28

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is releasing guidelines to more clearly define what is considered a truly “zero-emission” building. Unveiled on September 28 at the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo, EPA’s new outline is reportedly based on a “three pillar” approach. These pillars include no on-site emissions, the use of 100 percent renewable energy, and adherence to strict energy efficiency guidelines.

California agency to source 220 MW of power from mammoth New Mexico wind farm

Bullet Power Engineering – September 29

Peninsula Clean Energy, a community choice aggregation agency and electricity provider for San Mateo County, has inked a deal to source power from what is set to become the largest wind farm in the Western Hemisphere. Pattern Energy’s SunZia Wind project is expected to have a 3,515 MW capacity. Under the deal, Peninsula Clean Energy will source 220 MW, which would cover 13% of the agency’s annual electricity demand.

Private O&G firm to install multisite microgrid project

Bullet Microgrid Knowledge – September 29

Correlate Energy announced it will develop its first microgrid project for a large privately held oil and gas company in Southern California. The Los Angeles area customer, which Correlate Energy declined to name, has a 100 MW load spread across multiple locations. The first phase of the microgrid project will see up to 40 MW of solar and storage capacity installed at 20 of the client’s sites with an expected cost of more than $23 million. The project is pending underwriting and final permitting.

70,000-acre wind farm site set aside in Nevada by BLM

Bullet 8NewsNow – October 2

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has set aside nearly 70,000 acres in White Pine County, Nevada, for the Stagecoach Wind Project. The project is expected to generate 600 MW of power when it’s complete. It will be almost twice the size of the Spring Valley Wind Farm near Ely, Nevada’s first wind project, which averaged 313 MW over its first six years since coming online in 2012. By setting aside the land, BLM prevents new mining claims from interfering with project review or development.

New York State looking for partner on 12 MW solar project

Bullet Solar Industry Magazine – October 2

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the auction of New York State’s first “Build-Ready” project to advance large-scale renewable energy development across the state under the Accelerated Renewable Energy Growth and Community Benefit Act. The New York Energy Research and Development Authority is seeking a partner to transform a former mine in St. Lawrence County into one of the largest solar projects in the Adirondack Park: a 12 MW development sited within the boundaries of Benson Mines on a former tailings pile.
