New York State announced this week what it is calling the largest state investment in renewable energy with the conditional awards including three of the country’s largest proposed offshore wind farms as well as 22 land-based renewable energy projects representing a potential $20 billion in economic development investments. Included in the announcement are the largest offshore wind farms in the New York Bight, which was the federal government’s most successful lease auction, as well as steps to enhance manufacturing and the wind industry supply chain. NYSERDA (New York State Research and Development Authority) selected three offshore wind projects to proceed with a potential total of just over 4 GW of power capacity.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has directed the North American Electric Reliability Corp. (NERC) to develop reliability standards for inverter-based resources, or IBRs, such as wind, solar, and battery systems. FERC is bolstering standards for IBRs amid a surge in wind, solar, and storage development. Those resources use inverters to convert the direct current electricity they produce to alternating current electricity used on the grid. There have been at least 12 “events” on the grid involving IBRs since 2016, with an average loss of about 1,000 MW, demonstrating the risk that planners and grid operators must account for, FERC Acting Chairman Willie Phillips said last Thursday during the agency’s monthly meeting.
United Steelworkers Local 675 and more than a dozen labor unions are launching a new political coalition that will lobby California to help fossil fuel workers transition to clean energy jobs — and push state officials to protect those workers from extreme heat and other dangers of global warming. The unions behind California Labor for Climate Jobs are calling their initial policy platform the California Workers’ Climate Bill of Rights. It urges policymakers to invest in safety nets for oil and gas industry employees, including healthcare coverage and relocation, and to fund training programs that prepare those employees for similarly well-paying union jobs in clean energy fields.
UK’s Gore Street Energy Storage Fund PLC has secured financing for the development of the 200 MW/400 MWh Big Rock battery project in Imperial County, the firm’s lender has announced. First Citizens Bank has served as lead agent on a $60-million financing that will enable Gore Street to support the remaining development of the project and provide the company with additional liquidity for its growing portfolio.
The City of Fresno Department of Public Utilities (DPU) has conducted a ground-breaking ceremony for the development of its on-site solar energy and battery storage portfolio, which is now taking shape at three energy-intensive sites: the Fresno-Clovis Regional Wastewater Reclamation Facility, the Northeast Surface Water Treatment Facility, and the Southeast Surface Water Treatment Facility. DPU’s 27 MW behind-the-meter portfolio is being developed in partnership with ForeFront Power.
D.E. Shaw Renewable Investments, in partnership with Public Service Company of New Mexico and SOLV Energy, recently celebrated the groundbreaking of the San Juan 1 project, a 200 MW solar and 400 MWh storage facility in Farmington, New Mexico. The solar + storage facility is expected to begin commercial operations toward the end of the year 2024.
