Precinct caucuses were held Tuesday night and Minnesota Republicans helped Rick Santorum win big. The former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania had the support of over 21,000 caucus-goers—nearly 45% of the caucus attendees. Texas Congressman, Ron Paul, had a second place finish with 27%. Mitt Romney, former Governor of Massachusetts, and one-time Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, finished third and fourth with 17 and 11 percent, respectively. According to Public Policy Polling, nearly 35% of Minnesota Republicans were either undecided or open to changing their vote before the Tuesday caucuses. Turnout was low with just under 50,000 attendees, nearly 15,000 less than in 2008.

DFLers also caucused on Tuesday but with no need to nominate a presidential candidate, turnout paled in comparison to 2008 when over 200,000 Minnesota Democrats attended their precinct caucuses.

The Minnesota caucuses show the preference of attendees and is advisory only. Delegates will be determined at the May State Party Conventions.
