Texas AG Faces GOP Runoff in Primary Election

There will be a runoff in both the Texas Democratic and Republican primaries on May 24 to determine who stands in the general election, after no candidate in either race garnered the more than 50% of the vote required to secure the nomination.
With 96% of Texas counties tallied, Incumbent AG Ken Paxton led the GOP field with 43% of the votes in a closely-watched, high-profile race, leading Land Commissioner George P. Bush, who won 23%. Texas Supreme Court judge Eva Guzman, with 17%, and U.S. Representative Louie Gomert, also with 17%, were eliminated. On the Democratic side, former ACLU attorney Rochelle Garza won 43% and will probably face former Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski, although civil rights attorney Lee Merritt trails Jaworski as of this writing by fewer than 2,000 votes.
