Below is the Federal Policy team’s weekly preview, posted when Congress is in session.

HEADLINES

  • The House will continue working on appropriations bills, while the Senate continues voting on President Donald Trump’s nominees and begins consideration of the annual defense policy legislation.
  • Both chambers may address the migrant emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border.
  • Trump will officially launch his reelection campaign and will host Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for meetings as the leaders seek ratification of the United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement.

HOUSE

  • The House is in session Tuesday through Friday. Lawmakers plan to complete consideration of a first package of fiscal 2020 appropriations bills and proceed to the next spending package.
  • S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer will likely facing a grilling from lawmakers on the administration’s threatened Mexico tariffs and stalled trade discussions with China when he testifies before the House Ways and Means Committee.
  • The House Financial Services Committee has a busy week, including a subcommittee hearing on legislation to strengthen penalties for securities law violators.

SENATE

  • The Senate will confirm several judicial nominees and begin consideration of the annual National Defense Authorization Act.
  • The Senate Appropriations Committee will take up an emergency spending bill for security and humanitarian care at the southern border.
  • Lighthizer will also testify on administration trade policy before the Senate Finance Committee.

WHITE HOUSE

  • Trump on Tuesday will officially launch his 2020 campaign at a rally in Orlando.
  • Wednesday he will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to economist Arthur Laffer.
  • Thursday, he will host Trudeau at the White House for meetings focused on trade as well as tensions between the U.S. and China.
