Below is the federal policy team’s weekly preview, published each week when Congress is in session.

HEADLINES

• All eyes remain on Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court, as the FBI proceeds with its one-week investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct.

• The Senate begins the week by taking up a long-term Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reauthorization, and may also proceed to a water infrastructure bill. A floor vote on Kavanaugh remains possible at the end of the week.

• President Donald Trump’s week is focused on campaign stops for Republican midterm candidates throughout the country.

HOUSE

  • The House last Friday adjourned until after the November midterms.

SENATE

  • The Senate is slated to be in session through Friday. The procedural clock on Kavanaugh’s nomination has started, but a potential vote is not expected before late in the week. In the meantime, senators will take up House-passed legislation to reauthorize the FAA.
  • After a last-minute deal brokered by Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., the FBI is investigating claims of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh. Depending on whether the investigation reveals new information, his nomination may proceed to the floor later this week.
  • The Foreign Relations Committee will hold a hearing on Russia’s role in Syria and the Middle East.
  • The current listing of Senate committee activity can be found here.
