Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

  • Congress and the White House are relieved to be moving beyond the monthslong debt limit drama, after late last week approving budget legislation negotiated between President Joe Biden and Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
  • Biden this week will welcome heads of state from Denmark and the United Kingdom.
  • BakerHostetler’s Legislative Seminar, the Federal Policy team’s signature annual event featuring leading policymakers from both parties and both chambers of Congress, is this Wednesday. Join us!

HOUSE

  • The House will vote tonight through Thursday, focusing on legislation aiming to reduce overburdensome regulations.
  • The House Financial Services Committee tomorrow will hold a hearing on Treasury market volatility and debt management practices.
  • Wednesday, the Education and Workforce Committee will hold an oversight hearing on the Labor Department, with Acting Secretary Julie Su – whose nomination to lead the department is one of the next major flashpoints in Congress.

SENATE

  • The Senate will be in session tomorrow through Thursday, continuing votes on Biden’s nominees for both the judiciary and administration roles.
  • The Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday will hold a hearing on artificial intelligence and intellectual property.
  • Thursday, the Finance Committee will hold a hearing on consolidation in the healthcare sector.

WHITE HOUSE

  • Biden today will host Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen at the White House, followed later by a celebration for the Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs.
  • Thursday, Biden will welcome Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of the United Kingdom for bilateral meetings.
  • Friday, the president and first lady will travel to North Carolina, including a visit to the newly renamed Fort Liberty, formerly Fort Bragg.
