Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

  • Congress is racing to pass legislation to raise the debt limit and prevent a default, after House Republicans and the White House clinched an agreement Saturday night following intense negotiations.
  • The congressional hearing schedule is relatively light, as the House was originally scheduled to be in recess this week.
  • BakerHostetler’s Legislative Seminar is one week from tomorrow, featuring leading policymakers from both parties and both chambers of Congress. Join us!

HOUSE

  • The House will vote tonight on noncontroversial financial services legislation, taking up the Fiscal Responsibility Act tomorrow before departing for the originally scheduled recess.

SENATE

  • The Senate will begin its week with votes on judicial nominees before taking up the debt limit bill late in the week.
  • The Senate Banking Committee tomorrow will hold a hearing on countering China, with senior officials from the Treasury and Commerce departments.
  • The Energy and Natural Resources Committee will hold a hearing Thursday on electric reliability.

WHITE HOUSE

  • The White House will be working throughout the week to ensure Democratic support for President Joe Biden’s debt limit deal.
  • Biden will travel to Colorado to deliver the commencement address at the United States Air Force Academy on Thursday.

Friday, Biden will attend the Friday Evening Parade at Marine Barracks Washington.
