Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

  • The pressure is on Speaker Kevin McCarthy as House Republicans aim to pass their budget blueprint – a critical step for McCarthy’s negotiating position on raising the debt limit.
  • President Joe Biden will host a state visit from South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol.
  • Biden is expected to formally announce his reelection campaign this week, as the field of Republican challengers continues to grow.

HOUSE

  • The House will vote tomorrow through Friday, with the agenda centering on Republicans’ Limit, Save, Grow Act to raise the debt limit while cutting federal spending.
  • The House Energy and Commerce Innovation Subcommittee on Thursday will hold a legislative hearing on data privacy.

SENATE

  • The Senate will resume with consideration of Biden’s nominees.
  • The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee will vote Wednesday on Julie Su’s nomination to be Secretary of Labor.
  • On Thursday the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee will host the CEOs of Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian for an oversight hearing.

WHITE HOUSE

  • Tomorrow, Biden will speak at the North American Building Trade Unions Legislative Conference in Washington.
  • Wednesday, he will host South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and First Lady Kim Keon Hee for a state visit, including a state dinner.

Friday, the president will present the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy to the Air Force Academy. Go Falcons!
