Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

  • The Senate is expected to approve legislation to repeal authorizations of military force against Iraq from 1991 and 2002.
  • The congressional hearing schedule includes visits from several members of President Joe Biden’s cabinet, as well as TikTok CEO Shou Chew.
  • Biden will make his first visit to Canada as president.

HOUSE

  • The House is in session Wednesday through Friday, an abbreviated week as Republicans wrap up their retreat tomorrow.
  • Several members of the president’s cabinet will be on Capitol Hill to testify on his Fiscal 2024 budget, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, and Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young.
  • The House Energy and Commerce Committee on Thursday will hold a high-profile hearing with TikTok CEO Shou Chew.

SENATE

  • The Senate will return tomorrow, resuming consideration of legislation to repeal authorizations for use of military force against Iraq.
  • The cabinet will also be busy on the Senate side, with appearances by Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
  • U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai on Thursday will discuss the president’s trade agenda with the Senate Finance Committee.

WHITE HOUSE

  • Today, the president will host Jason Sudeikis and other cast members from “Ted Lasso” for a discussion on the importance of mental health.
  • Tuesday, Biden will speak at the Interior Department’s Conservation in Action Summit.
  • Thursday and Friday, Biden will visit Canada for the first time as president.
