Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

  • President Joe Biden is in Japan, the final stop on his first trip to Asia as president.
  • Primary season is in full swing, with elections Tuesday in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia and Texas.
  • Congress is winding down toward Memorial Day, with the House only holding committee meetings and the Senate in for a short week.

HOUSE

  • The House is in a committee workweek. No floor votes are planned.
  • The Energy and Commerce Oversight Subcommittee will hold a hearing Wednesday on the infant formula shortage with Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Robert Califf and other witnesses.
  • The Education and Labor Committee will hold a hearing Thursday on the policies and priorities of the Education Department.

SENATE

  • The Senate will reconvene tomorrow and vote on the House-passed Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act.
  • The Finance Committee on Wednesday will hold a hearing on supply chain resiliency.
  • The Senate Agriculture Committee will hold a hearing Thursday on “opportunities and challenges facing farmers, families, and rural communities.”

WHITE HOUSE

  • In Japan, Biden is meeting with Emperor Naruhito and holding talks with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
  • The White House is launching Biden’s Indo-Pacific Framework for Prosperity.
  • Tomorrow in Tokyo, Biden will meet with the leaders of Australia, India and Japan.
