Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

  • Gun violence now dominates attention on Capitol Hill, amid a wave of shootings including the horrors in Uvalde, Texas, and in Buffalo.
  • The House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol will begin its public hearings.
  • President Joe Biden will travel to the West Coast for the Summit of the Americas.

HOUSE

  • The House will hold votes Tuesday through Thursday, planning to take up legislation to address gun violence. The House will also vote on a bipartisan reauthorization of federal water infrastructure programs, and on the Food and Drug Administration’s user-fee programs for medical devices and drugs.
  • The House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol will hold a hearing in primetime on Thursday.
  • The House and Senate Armed Services Committee will begin marking up the Fiscal Year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act.

SENATE

  • The Senate will reconvene to consider more of President Biden’s nominees, and may also take up House-passed legislation to address the health of veterans exposed to burn pits.
  • The Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee will take up its version of legislation to reauthorize FDA user-fee programs.
  • The Energy and Natural Resources Committee will hold a hearing on addressing extreme drought in the western United States.

WHITE HOUSE

  • Biden will appear on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Wednesday.
  • Thursday and Friday, Biden will attend the ninth Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles with other leaders from the region.
  • Saturday, Biden will visit Santa Fe to receive a briefing on wildfires in New Mexico.
