The U.S. Navy and the Department of Justice have set a deadline of August 2024 for Camp Lejeune veterans who were diagnosed with cancer or other illnesses after serving at the marine base to file a claim and receive compensation.

Veterans, their family members, and workers at Camp Lejeune with illnesses linked to the marine base are eligible to receive compensation from the U.S. government under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act, a federal law designed to compensate individuals who were exposed to contaminated water at the base.

Camp Lejeune Settlements Could Total $3.3 Trillion

Between 1953 and 1987, veterans and others who were stationed at Camp Lejeune were exposed to toxic chemicals in the marine base’s drinking water. Exposure to this contaminated water has been linked to a number of illnesses, including:

  • Bladder cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Cardiac birth defects
  • Esophageal cancer
  • Hepatic steatosis
  • Kidney cancer
  • Leukemia
  • Lung cancer
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Myelodysplastic syndrome
  • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  • Parkinson’s disease

Two years ago, Congress passed the Camp Lejeune Justice Act to compensate veterans, their families, and workers who became sick after serving or working at the base.

So far, the U.S. government has received 117,000 compensation claims under the law. At least 1,300 Camp Lejeune lawsuits have also been filed in North Carolina federal court by individuals who were sickened by contaminated water at the marine base.

In October 2023, the federal government issued the first three payments to veterans under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act. At least 23 additional settlement offers have been made so far. The U.S. Navy and the Department of Justice estimate that the total amount of Camp Lejeune settlement claims paid by the governent could total as much as $3.3 trillion.
