Finding Time for Business Development

A lack of time is the No. 1 obstacle that lawyers say that prevents them from doing law firm marketing and business development.

But, according to business development veteran Larry Bodine, what they’re really saying is, “I’ve set my priorities and business development is not on the list.” Every lawyer faces billable hour targets, firm administrative duties, handholding with clients, family and personal demands on their time. However, the successful lawyers have made business development a priority and they find time for it. The best way to find time to be a rainmaker is to weave business development into activities you are already doing.

Lawyers can find time to market by meeting a referral source for coffee, visiting a client for lunch and getting active in their local community. Women rainmakers have found success by getting on the board or PTA of the schools their children attend, and by meeting executives through their children.

You must bear in mind that you are a lawyer 24 hours a day. You don’t stop being a lawyer when you leave the office. Every time you meet someone new or walk into a room, it’s a business development opportunity.
