U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit -
On August 5th, as part of the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, the World Bank Group committed $5 billion in new technical and financial support for energy projects in the six, phase I countries of President Barack Obama’s Power Africa initiative, including Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, and Tanzania. In announcing the new funding, World Bank President Jim Yong Kim said the new financial commitment was urgently needed to generate more electricity in Africa, where 600 million people lake access to electricity despite the continent’s wealth of hydropower, geothermal, wind, and solar resources.
