The beginning of 2014 is an excellent time to assess your training needs for the year and schedule training sessions before schedules fill up. An employment training program should include training for both employees and supervisors. Annual training for employees and supervisors on discrimination and harassment issues is recommended and can provide a defense to a harassment claim. You should consider the following training subjects for supervisors: compliance with leave of absence and accommodation issues under the Family and Medical Leave Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act; effective performance management of subordinates and enforcing handbook policies; minimizing legal risks with hiring, discipline and firing decisions; and drafting effective performance evaluations. Training can also be a good vehicle to educate supervisors on new workplace policies or procedures as well as legal trends and developments.
