In a memo (http://bit.ly/2k2Qal6) released Aug 23, Alphabet Inc.’s Google informed employees that disruptive discussions in the workplace would not be tolerated. The memo specifically targeted “debates about non-work topics,” ad hominem attacks, and data breaches as unacceptable.

“While sharing information and ideas with colleagues helps build community, disrupting the workday to have a raging debate over politics or the latest news story does not,” the memo stated. “Our primary responsibility is to do the work we’ve each been hired to do, not to spend working time on debates about non-work topics.”

The memo comes after a year in which Google employees vocally protested several of the company’s projects and policies, culminating in a showdown that saw CEO Sundar Pichai backtrack on cooperation with China and the Pentagon (http://bit.ly/2kji8cz).
