A group of New York taxpayers are deploying a new weapon in their fight against inefficient government: The False Claims Act. The law, which is often used by government prosecutors to punish alleged fraud committed by taxpayers, imposes penalties of up to three times the damages suffered, along with statutory penalties of up to $12,000 for every fraudulent claim.
