Last week, Cargill Meat Solutions terminated approximately 190 employees who failed to report to work for three consecutive days. The employees, who are Muslim, stayed away from work in protest over the meatpacking plant’s practices relating to time off to pray. The employees requested that they all be allowed a break for evening prayer at the same time during the second shift, something the plant did not allow. The fallout from the termination decision has made headlines around the world.

Discrimination

The Washington Post wrote about the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court’s same sex marriage decision and its impact on couples and their employers.
Eric B. Meyer outlined the marital status discrimination claim of a married superintendent who had an extramarital affair.

Technology

HR Zone covered Google’s Re:Work site and how the tech giant has adopted a data mindset.
The Los Angeles Times discussed the rise of artificial intelligence in the role of personal assistant.
HRE Daily noted the HR tech trends to watch in 2016.

In other developments:

The NLRB found a policy prohibiting employees from recording conversations at work to be a violation of an employee’s Section 7 rights.
An Ohio court ruled that a non-compete geographic limitation should be measured “as the crow flies” and not based on driving miles.
BuzzFeed highlighted the ten major changes in the workplace in 2015, including robots, Department of Labor changes, and minimum wage increases.
BuzzFeed also declared that 2015 was the year work stopped working, noting the increase in employee misclassification issues.
Corporate Counsel counted down the top five labor and employment law stories of 2015, including the NLRB’s stance on joint employment, Uber’s misclassification case, and FCRA disclosure dangers.
