Federal contractors beware. More changes are coming your way. On July 21, 2014, President Obama issued an executive order prohibiting discrimination by federal contractors on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation. The order prohibits gender identity discrimination by federal government contractors. Contractors are already prevented from engaging in sexual orientation discrimination based upon a 1998 executive order from President Clinton. The order does not provide any exemption for religion-affiliated employers to make decisions based on their religious views about gender identity or sexual orientation. The Secretary of Labor is tasked with carrying out this order, so stay posted for further details. In the meantime, federal contractors should review their policies and procedures to ensure compliance.
