The United States Energy Information Administration (“EIA”) issued a January 14th report titled:

New Electric Generating Capacity in 2020 Will Come Primarily from Wind and Solar (“Report”)

EIA states that its most recent inventory of electric generators indicates that 76% of capacity that will be added in 2020 will come from solar and wind sources.

The percentages allocated to solar and wind are 44% and 32%, respectively. The remaining sources include:

• Natural Gas – 22%
• Hydroelectric/Battery Storage – 2%

Selected data from the Report includes:

• Wind – 18.5 gigawatts (“GW”) expected to come on line in 2020 driven to some extent by the expiration of the United States production tax credit in 2020
• Solar Photovoltaics – 13.5 GW of solar capacity to come online in 2020 which would surpass a previous annual record
• Natural Gas – 9.3 GW capacity additions projected for 2020 with 6.7 GW consisting of combined-cycle plants
• Coal – 5.8 GW of coal-fired capacity expected to be retired in 2020
• Nuclear – Two nuclear plants totaling 1.6 GW are scheduled to retire in 2020
