What Caused the Aven Financial Breach?

The Aven Financial data breach was only recently announced, and Aven’s filing with the Attorney General of Texas provides only limited important information on what led up to the breach. However, the company also filed a notice with the Attorney General of California, which provides additional information.

According to these sources, on July 17, 2023, a security researcher informed Aven that he was able to access “an internal, in-development storage system containing personal information, through a temporary vulnerability in that system.” The researcher was not a hacker and was informing Aven so that it could cure the vulnerability. Within 45 minutes of learning about the vulnerability, Aven eliminated any future risk of unauthorized access. Aven claims that it was able to confirm that the security researcher was the only one to access the information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Aven Financial reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, driver’s license number and address.

On July 31, 2023, Aven Financial sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident.
