Report on Supply Chain Compliance 3, no. 19 (October 1, 2020)
Following the United States’ decision to impose tariffs on Canadian aluminum, Canada has vowed to retaliate with tariffs of its own. The Canadian ambassador to the U.S., Kirsten Hillman, told Canadian media Sept. 11 that Canada would impose tariffs shortly[1] and that “‘they will remain in effect until the U.S. eliminates its tariffs against Canada.’”
“The two countries are party to the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, the trade pact that replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement. Prior to the signing of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, both Canada and the U.S. had imposed tariffs on each other. Those tariffs were removed following the implementation of the agreement” in July, according to a previous report by RSCC.[2]
U.S. tariffs on Canadian aluminum took effect Aug. 16, 2020.
