Compliance Today (October 2020)
On July 6, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released details on a proposed rule that would make changes to the End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Prospective Payment System (PPS), as well as updates to the acute kidney injury dialysis payment rate and the ESRD Quality Incentive Program.
The ESRD PPS is a bundled payment that includes all renal dialysis services furnished for outpatient maintenance dialysis, including drugs and biological products and other renal dialysis items and services. The proposed base rate for 2021 is “$255.59, an increase of $16.26 to the current base rate of $239.33,” which takes into account the annual update to the wage index.
The proposed ruling also makes changes to the transitional add-on payment adjustment for new and innovative equipment and supplies and updates to the National Healthcare Safety Network validation study.
