The EU has finally adopted new transparency rules regarding so-called conflicts minerals being imported into the EU. This follows a series of policy initiatives from the European Commission to drive for greater transparency and reporting of businesses’ supply chains. At the centre of the new requirements is the obligation on importers and traders of tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold (3TG) to carry out supply-chain due diligence and adopt a robust traceability system. There are also requirements on importers to adopt a supply chain policy for these minerals and metals (or adapt existing policies) and to communicate this to suppliers and the public. This alert provides an overview of the new transparency rules.
